Experimental Operationalizations of Anthropomorphism in HCI Contexts: A Scoping Review

Anthropomorphism of computerized agents, avatars, and technologies has been the focus a large body research in human-computer interaction (HCI). Yet, operational definitions anthropomorphism vary greatly, creating potential for error when broad theoretical conclusions are drawn from operationalizations lacking content validity. This scoping review aimed to identify categorize range experimental studies technologies, adding needed clarity diverse area inquiry. Using five selection criteria, this categorized operationalization(s) 31 experiment-based articles published academic journals. Results showed heavy dominance manipulations physical appearance as anthropomorphism, which thretens validity raises questions about understanding HCI.
